The HEAL project supports the modernisation of intensive care services at Berdychiv City Hospital in Ukraine’s Zhytomyr region. The hospital serves approximately 168,000 residents as well as internally displaced persons and plays a key role in regional healthcare provision.

As part of the project, the existing intensive care unit will be extensively renovated and modernised to ensure safe, modern and uninterrupted intensive care services. In addition, new medical equipment will be procured to strengthen critical care capacity.

A second key component focuses on professional education and training for healthcare personnel. In cooperation with Ukrainian and Estonian partner institutions, doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals receive training in intensive care medicine, trauma care, surgery, rehabilitation, anaesthesiology and crisis counselling. These measures help improve the quality of care and strengthen the long-term capacity of the healthcare system.

The project responds to the significant challenges facing Ukraine’s healthcare sector as a result of the war. By combining modern infrastructure, up-to-date medical technology and targeted capacity building, HEAL contributes to improving healthcare services for the population of Berdychiv and the wider Zhytomyr region.
