Humanitarian Assistance by the ICRC in Yemen

The people of Yemen continue to suffer from armed conflict, economic decline and severely limited access to basic services. Fighting, tensions in the Red Sea, and the presence of landmines and explosive remnants of war put civilians at risk. Millions of people depend on humanitarian assistance, while hunger, disease outbreaks, displacement and extreme weather events further worsen the situation.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has been active in Yemen since 1962. Thanks to its neutral, impartial and independent approach, it is able to operate across different sides of the conflict lines. At the request of the parties to the conflict, the ICRC can act as a neutral intermediary in the release, transfer and repatriation of detainees, as well as in the handover of human remains.

The ICRC visits places of detention, restores family links and supports efforts to trace missing persons. It provides food assistance and cash support, strengthens agricultural, livestock-based and small business livelihoods, and supports health facilities, hospitals, emergency services and rehabilitation programmes. In addition, water, sanitation, energy and health infrastructure are repaired and rehabilitated, while communities are informed about the risks posed by landmines and explosive remnants of war.

Through its contribution, Liechtenstein supports the protection of civilians, promotes respect for international humanitarian law and helps maintain essential services.
