Securing Water and Electricity Supply After the Dam Disaster
In the course of the war in Ukraine, the Kakhovka Dam on the Dnipro River was destroyed by an explosion in June 2023. The reservoir drained completely, causing severe flooding in villages and towns in the Kherson and Mykolaiv oblasts. People were left with almost no access to clean drinking water, the risk of communicable diseases increased, and agriculture was also heavily affected.
The Southeast European Initiative (SECI), already active in the region, expanded its emergency assistance in response to the dam’s destruction. Established within the framework of the OSCE, SECI has been working on water supply, hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, health and cash assistance.
In the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions, SECI provides people with clean drinking water by delivering mobile water filtration units to affected areas. It also supplies generators to secure electricity for water pumps, cold chains and other vital systems. With its contribution, Liechtenstein supports the procurement, logistics and distribution of this technical equipment in 2023 and 2024. A second contribution in 2024 and an additional one in 2025 specifically fund the delivery of emergency generators to help Ukraine cope with the extraordinary challenges of winter.
Project goals
Purchase and delivery of mobile water filter systems to supply clean drinking water to the population affected by the destruction of the Kachowka dam.
Procurement and delivery of technical equipment, such as generators to ensure the power supply for critical processes, such as water pumps and cold chains.
Maintaining vital infrastructure, e.g. for schools or essential operations, and expanding shelters for hospitals, kindergartens or schools.
