Education and Peacebuilding in a Fragile Region of South Sudan

South Sudan remains one of the world's most fragile states. Political tensions, local conflicts, displacement, and recurring droughts and floods continue to affect large parts of the population and limit access to basic services. In remote regions such as Jebel Boma near the Ethiopian border, access to education remains particularly constrained. Many children and young people do not attend school or leave education prematurely, with girls facing especially significant barriers.

In 2026, Liechtenstein is supporting a project implemented by Ena (Switzerland) in partnership with the local organisation ACROSS. The initiative aims to provide children and young people with access to education, protection and future opportunities despite challenging circumstances. The project combines educational support with peacebuilding and social cohesion activities.

Key activities include teacher training and professional development, improvements to school infrastructure, the provision of school furniture and sanitation facilities, and scholarships for further education, particularly for girls. The project also provides psychosocial support for children and young people. At the same time, local peace structures are strengthened through dialogue initiatives, youth forums, peace committees and community-based activities.

Through this contribution, Liechtenstein helps maintain essential education and protection services in a remote and underserved region affected by insecurity. The project contributes to improved educational outcomes, stronger social cohesion and better prospects for a more peaceful future.
