Emergency Relief Following the Earthquakes in Venezuela

On 24 June 2026, two major earthquakes struck Venezuela. The greater Caracas area and the state of La Guaira were particularly affected. Homes, schools, healthcare facilities and critical infrastructure were damaged or destroyed. Many families lost their homes and are now living in temporary shelters.

The earthquakes hit a country that was already facing a severe humanitarian and economic crisis. Poverty, food insecurity, limited access to healthcare and inadequate public services have further complicated the response to the disaster. Despite national and international relief efforts, significant gaps in assistance remain.

As part of a national fundraising appeal, Caritas Liechtenstein raised CHF 65,450. Liechtenstein is supplementing this appeal with a government contribution of CHF 50,000. This support complements the emergency assistance already provided through international organisations and the Red Cross by strengthening targeted civil society initiatives.

Under the project, emergency relief packages containing blankets, sleeping mats, hygiene items, menstrual products, nappies and other essential supplies are being distributed. Affected people also receive psychosocial support and legal counselling. Individuals with specific protection needs are referred to specialised services. Local organisations and community networks are supported with transport, logistics and distribution activities, strengthening their capacity to continue providing emergency assistance. In total, around 1,800 people affected by the earthquakes are expected to benefit from the project.

Project goals

Improve the immediate living conditions of around 1,800 people most severely affected by the earthquakes.

Provide affected families with essential relief and hygiene items.

Reduce health and protection risks in temporary shelters.

Deliver psychosocial support to affected people, including children and young people.

Provide legal counselling and referrals for individuals with specific protection needs.

Strengthen local organisations and community networks involved in disaster response.

Special features of the project

The government contribution complements a fundraising campaign organised by Caritas Liechtenstein. Implementation is carried out through Caritas Switzerland and local partners. Ten local organisations and volunteer groups are involved in delivering the project.
