Fighting corruption in Latin America

Corruption is shaking people's trust in their state institutions in many countries around the world. It hinders social development and economic growth and jeopardises democracy. The International Centre for Asset Recovery (ICAR) is committed to fighting corruption worldwide.

Founded in 2007 by the Basel Institute of Governance, the independent competence centre for asset recovery was supported by Liechtenstein from day one. One aspect of ICAR’s work is to assist the national authorities of various Latin American countries in the investigation and prosecution of financial offences. From its regional office in Peru, ICAR helps state institutions in South America to build capacity in the areas of financial investigations and asset recovery and provides advice in criminal prosecution and reform projects.

ICAR supports developing and emerging countries with requests for mutual legal assistance or by facilitating cooperation via formal or informal channels. ICAR places a particular focus on the strategy of international cooperation in important international corruption cases.
