Humanitarian Assistance by the ICRC in South Sudan
The humanitarian situation in South Sudan deteriorated further in 2026. Fighting between government and opposition forces, as well as intercommunal violence, has resulted in deaths, injuries and displacement. Healthcare services, infrastructure and livelihoods have been severely affected. The war in neighbouring Sudan has placed additional pressure on the country, as returnees and refugees continue to arrive in South Sudan. Hunger, climate-related shocks and limited access to essential services further aggravate the situation.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has maintained a presence in South Sudan since the 1980s. Its neutral, impartial and independent mandate enables it to engage in confidential dialogue with authorities and weapon bearers, visit people in detention and act as a neutral intermediary.
The ICRC restores family links, supports efforts to trace missing persons and promotes the dignified management of human remains. It provides food assistance and cash support, distributes essential household items and helps strengthen food production and income-generating activities. Healthcare facilities, hospitals, first responders and rehabilitation services receive support. In addition, the ICRC provides psychosocial assistance and improves water and essential service systems in conflict-affected communities and places of detention.
Through its support for the ICRC’s activities, Liechtenstein contributes to the protection and basic assistance of particularly vulnerable people in a severely underfunded humanitarian crisis.
