Humanitarian Assistance for Refugees and Host Communities in Eastern Chad

The ongoing conflict in Sudan has forced hundreds of thousands of people to flee to neighbouring countries since 2023. Eastern Chad has been particularly affected, with refugee camps and host communities in the Ouaddaï and Sila regions facing immense pressure. Shortages of food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities and income opportunities have further worsened an already fragile humanitarian situation. Women and children are especially vulnerable and are often affected by violence, displacement and trauma.

In 2026, Liechtenstein is supporting a humanitarian assistance project implemented by SWISSAID in eastern Chad. The organisation has a long-standing presence in the region and works closely with local authorities and international partners. The project combines emergency relief with measures aimed at strengthening the resilience of both refugees and host communities.

Key activities include food assistance for particularly vulnerable families, improved access to water, sanitation and hygiene services, support for agricultural production through climate-adapted seeds and agroecological training, as well as psychosocial support and protection services for women at heightened risk. In addition, income-generating activities help strengthen the economic self-reliance of affected populations.

Through this contribution, Liechtenstein supports the response to one of the world's largest and most underfunded humanitarian crises. At the same time, it helps ensure access to essential services, strengthens resilience among affected populations and contributes to reducing tensions between refugees and host communities.
