Innovative organic vegetable production in East Africa

In East Africa, the cultivation and sale of vegetables plays a vital role for the population. However, vegetable production is severely affected by infestations of plant pests and diseases. To meet this challenge without chemical pesticides, a gentle, ecological solution is being applied. Together with experts from partner organisations, vegetable farmers develop and validate biological, integrated pest controls. The most important vegetable pests are controlled with push-pull systems, beneficial insects, parasitic fungi, biopesticides and the use of resistant, indigenous vegetable varieties.

Project goals

Validation of integrated pest management methods.

Strengthening agro-ecological farming systems such as push-pull.

Capacity building for the application of agro-ecological farming methods.

Special features of the project

The project activities contribute to improving food and environmental security, reducing the use of harmful pesticides and increasing income opportunities for smallholder vegetable producers.
