Protecting peace processes from criminals

In many crisis regions, there is a risk that criminal power structures will influence peacekeeping measures. The "Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue", HD Centre, is focussed on this area of tension: with its "Organised Crime and Peacemaking" programme, the foundation, which was established in Geneva in 1999, sheds light on the significance of criminal power structures in peace processes and aims to prevent peace negotiations from being exploited in this way and entire regions or countries from becoming unstable.

The programme focusses on conducting studies and seminars as well as providing practical guidance. In 2024 the HD Centre has developed analyses, plans and workshops to investigate the links between illegal economy and organised crime in conflict regions like Colombia or Myanmar.

The experience gained from these assignments is incorporated into uniform standards to make peace processes more resistant to criminal influences. For Liechtenstein, the HD Centre programme offers an opportunity to advance an aspect of peace mediation that has so far received little attention within the international community.
