Strengthening Ukrainian demining organisations through targeted capacity development

Liechtenstein is supporting a two-phase project run by the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) that aims to enable Ukrainian demining organisations to contribute independently and sustainably to mine clearance. The goal is to strengthen the capacities of local organisations.

Since the start of Russia's war of aggression in February 2022, Ukraine has been one of the most heavily mined countries in the world. Around a quarter of the country's territory is affected – equivalent to around 875 times the area of Liechtenstein. Complete clearance will take decades. Mine clearance is therefore a key priority for Liechtenstein in the context of Ukraine's reconstruction.

The project is divided into two phases:

Phase 1: Assessment of the capacity gaps of Ukrainian demining organisations. The aim is to identify those organisations that can be supported particularly effectively through targeted funding.

Phase 2: Technical and organisational training for selected organisations, based on the results of phase 1. The training follows a train-the-trainer approach and is intended to contribute to the long-term independence of the organisations.

Liechtenstein is providing CHF 400,000 in funding, primarily for phase 2 of the project. Additional funds are coming from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
