UNICEF helps children in the earthquake regions of Türkiye
In February 2023 more than 9 million people in Türkiye were affected by a series of earthquakes and their devastating humanitarian consequences. Several million children in particular suffered as a result of the disaster. Many were separated from their families, lost touch with them or required psychosocial support. Their access to education was also abruptly interrupted.
As part of its emergency aid measures in the regions of Türkiye affected by the earthquakes, UNICEF is particularly committed to protecting local children. The United Nations Children's Fund has planned an emergency aid programme for over three million children, which includes psychosocial support, access to drinking water, sanitary facilities and improved hygiene conditions, as well as the provision of non-food items and financial aid. As this UNICEF programme was initially only half-funded, Liechtenstein made an important contribution to the success of the measures.
Project goals
Psychosocial support for one million affected children and their caregivers.
WASH measures for one million children: access to drinking water, availability of sanitary facilities and improved hygiene conditions.
Supplying 1.5 million children with non-food items and financial assistance for 500‘000 households.
